James Nolan Gandy

Found these artwork on This Is Colossal so awesome that we had to share. They are the creations of drawing machinist James Nolan Gandy.  The Northeast Florida-based artist created mechanical parts and movements using metal, wood, a variety of pens. pulleys and gears to create the patterns.

More of these intricate patterns can be seen on his website and on Instagram.  Some of his pieces can be purchased on his website.

Renée Gouin

Loving these monotypes created by Vancouver-based artist and printmaker, Renée Gouin.  She studied visual art, design and literature in British Columbia, New York and Switzerland.  In her biography and in La Collectionneuse she says this about her art:

“I’m inspired by the process of reduction, paring down objects to their essential form”.

“The idea of reduction stems from my appreciation of Japanese woodblock prints, their muted tonalities and restrained compositions.”

“I see the process of reduction being less about abstraction and more about creating clarity and harmony between the essential formal elements: shape, colour, and composition. The negative space is really important in my images. It accentuates the subjects within the space and their relationship with one another. By pairing down the compositional elements, the aesthetic experience is more immediate and direct.”

Polly Fern

We are loving these illustrated maps featuring antique shops and historical buildings of various UK locations and of Paris as well.  They are the creations of UK-based illustrator, ceramist and canary keeper Polly Fern.  She illustrates and paints not only on paper but also on various ceramic pieces which we featured on January, 2016.  On Flow Magazine she says this about what inspires her:

“Local, everyday stories. I love to discover gardens, or buildings with a rich history of craft. I also visit my local library because it has a fantastic heritage center where I can delve into the archives and discover the history of people’s lives within Norfolk. Thinking back to my childhood also inspires me, as I grew up in the Norfolk countryside and lived on a farm at a very young age. I had previously been a working dairy farm that my grandparents ran. My grandmother had a collection of pottery, all of which featured cow motifs, and I think of it often – it helps inspire my ceramic works.”

View more of her work on her website, Facebook and Instagram.  Some of her pieces can be
purchased on Big Cartel.
