Britta Marakatt-Labba

Really need to see this up close to truly appreciate these intricate embroidered narratives created by Swedish textile designer and artist, Britta Marakatt-Labba. Her art consist mainly of textile embroidery, watercolor painting, and lithography working as a book illustrator and as a costume and set designer. On Lecture and Notes she writes this about herself:

“I am married to a reindeer herder from Saarivuoma Sámi village, and am resident in Övre Soppero, Kiruna municipality. Since the end of the 70s I have been doing narrative embroidery that depicts scenes from everyday Sámi life, political reflections, stories of Sámi culture and history and Sámi mythological pictures. The magnificent natural world and the white snow of the glistening winter landscape are a constant presence. Embroidery work requires an aesthetic based on slowness. It is a journey in time and space in which every stitch breathes experiences and reflection, and creates stories.”

Erin Paisley

Erin Paisley is a mother of two who is a Milwaukee sculptor, illustrator, designer and crafter. This is how she describes herself in her Etsy shop:

“I have no degrees, I teach myself how to do everything by reading instructions multiple times, very slowly and very carefully…or else by trial and error.
When I sit down to draw, I have a big eraser by my side.
I can’t keep a sketch book, and I’m terrible at planning things out. I pretty much just belly flop into everything I do and hope for the best (I was never very good at diving either..)
I hope you enjoy my pictures, they come from a place I’ve gone since I was a child….where? I’m not sure, but it’s fueled by music and a mood, and comes from my heart. I usually don’t know what my drawings will be until they have already shown themselves on the paper.”

“I’ve recently become most enthralled with Ceramics, taking my paintings to functional level. Everything is handmade in my studio. All ceramics are hand painted in my signature style using layers of underglaze and over glazes, then fired in my home studio kiln to be fully functional and food safe(although the dishes are all original art pieces and will be perfectly at home hanging on a wall).”

Siiri Väisänen

Siiri Väisänen is a Finnish illustrator and graphic designer currently based in England. Her style is colorful and textured showing an appreciation for simplicity and geometric shapes. She is inspired by Scandinavian folk art and her interest is in editorial and book illustration as well as in animation. In an article on Makers Movement she says this about her biggest challenge:

“Being consistent! I tend to have creative periods when I am constantly making something and have multiple projects to work on. Then I have times that I feel like not doing much at all and only do little things at a time. I think the tough part has been to accept it and be chill about it. Not doing much stresses me out, and that’s not good for creativity. It’s good to remember that you can’t create amazing things all the time, and that it’s okay to have a little time off. I has also been important to learn to do and create things that I like to make, not something that I think others would like me to make. Even as an illustrator and working with clients it is important to keep your own vision and stay true to yourself. It’s not always so easy, and I still have a lot to learn.”
