Owen Gent

OwenGentOwen Gent is a freelance illustrator and graphic designer based in Cornwall, England, who specializes in a range of creative areas such as publishing, editorial design, advertising, and animation. This quote from an interview on Cosmic-Orgasm gives you a tiny glimpse of what influences his style:

“Listening to a lot of traditional folk music definitely feeds into my work and spending a lot of time walking, especially on the Cornish coast has played a lare ppart in the themes and feel of my work. I’ve always found something beautifl in melancholy, and that’s always what’s affected me most in the music, film and artwork that I love, and that’s what I’d like people to take away from my work.”

Maria Svarbova

MariaSvarbovaThese images are the work of self-taught photographer and art director, Maria Svarbova. The
Slovakia-based artist finished her university studies of conservation – restoration and archeology but has dedicated herself to photography since 2010. Her profile on Saatchi Art describes her work as follows:

“Inspired by the historic artifacts and environments of Communist Czechoslovakia Mária presents an imaginary dehumanized world that features every day situations. Situations that illuminate a fictional world that is inhabited by emotionless individuals who seem to be simply going through the motions—emotionless and static in the roles they assume. Using a limited subdued palette of colors, the focus is on the narrative. Each frame within the series is meticulous arranged and the models are carefully chosen to reflect the mood and sensation that she is looking for. Both complex and evocative Mária’s work challenges the roles that humans play in society and ask the viewer to reflect on their own individual role in society.”

Emily Sutton

EmilySuttonEmily Sutton is an artist and illustrator based in York, a city in England. We visited her website to review her illustration work but found these great fish sculptures that we just had to post. This is what she writes in her profile:

“My work incorporates a love of pattern and detail and is strongly influenced by the landscape and creatures of my surroundings in the Yorkshire countryside, as well as all kinds of weird and wonderful objects found in museums and antique shops.”

“A visit to the museum of folk art in New York inspired an ongoing interest in folk art of all kinds, and I am also influenced by 20th century illustrators such as Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious, and the American lithographed children’s books of a similar era.”

“Now based in a house on a hill in the middle of nowhere, I am currently working on the illustrations for a children’s book myself (more news to come on that soon!) as well as producing work for various exhibitions.”
