Plantillo

PlantilloBerkeley-based owner, maker, curator and designer Sabine Hermann brings the outdoors in with her handmade decorative pillows sold on Etsy under the shop and brand name, Plantillo. The 2-dimensional images are custom printed on cotton canvas and the sewn shapes give the pillows their 3-dimensional look. Here’s what the artisan says about her process:

“I came up with the idea for PLANTILLO while walking through my neighborhood and surrounding hills in Berkeley, CA. I love to find interesting objects on my path, and I can’t resist stuffing them into my pockets and taking photos. My ever-growing collection of leaves, bark, pods, flowers, and logs have inspired me to turn my found treasures into home décor. It brings me happiness to both preserve nature and bring it into your home.”

Isabelle de Borchgrave

IsabelledeBorchgraveTotally in awe of this elaborate historical paper costumes created by Belgian artist, Isabelle de Borchgrave. Inspired by a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art she began to work on four big collections all in paper and trompe l’oeil. Although noted today for fashion and paper folding the artist has never put aside her one and original driving force; painting, some of which can also be seen on her website.

She creates contemporary designs that are combined with traditional textile making techniques such as hand block printing, screen printing, embroidery, shibori and weaving. Often the techniques are utilized in combination. The company’s mission statement describes her work more precisely:

“Our mission is to enhance the lives of the users and producers of our products that are simple, beautiful and luxurious; as well as environmentally and socially conscious.”
