Johanna Basford

JohannaBasfordYou really have to see Dundee-based illustrator Johanna Basford’s work up close to really appreciate her incredible illustrations. It is apparent that she prefers ink and pen to pixels. She writes this about her intricate, hand drawn designs:

“Every piece I create starts life as a simple pencil sketch, evolving into a rambling pen and ink drawing usually spanning several sheets of paper. I love the tactile nature of the materials I use and the joy of smudgy fingerprints. My delicate hand inked designs intend to charm and delight, inviting you to peer closer and discover the hidden intricacies.

For me, computer generated graphics can feel cold and soulless whereas hand drawing captures a sense of energy and character which no pixel can ever replicate.”

Chou Chou

ChouChouLampWe’re always on the lookout for handcrafted projects that we would like to try making. We love this cube garland lamp from Japanese online store, Chou Chou. We’ve seen these lamps made from origami papers but we prefer using fabric for the cubes. Chou Chou makes theirs from Liberty and vintage fabric.
