Kiyoshi Saito is a master Japanese printmaker and one of the first member in the sosaku hanga art movement. Their action advocated principles of art that is “self-drawnâ€, “self-carved†and “self-printed†creating art for art’s sake. He worked as a sign painter apprentice but in 1932 moved to Tokyo to study art. He developed a style of woodblock prints with a diminished color palette and simplified forms. It is his compositions and aesthetic simplicity that attracted us to his work.
Kyoto-based artist Kaori Watanabe is known for employing both the traditional Japanese style painting (nihongo) and a contemporary style into her work. She studied at Kyoto Saga University of Arts and has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions. In 2006 origami motifs was introduced in her paintings. We were fascinated with this theme of child and origami so we posted a few of her paintings.
We would love to spend a week in Japan to study sashiko embroidery. Been finding lots of merchandise using this embellishment. The coin purses above are the creations of company branded, Collect-G. The unnamed artist/artists started making the coin purses in 2010. They worked primarily on event openings and consignment sales but has recently been focusing on web sales.Â
