Laurel Roth Hope

Laurel Roth Hope is a full time, self-taught artist and naturalist who lives and works in Northern California.   Prior to devoting herself to art she worked as a park ranger and in natural resource conservation. She has called herself “an artist that wishes she was a scientist”, which is reflected in her work.  She began crocheting “Biodiversity Reclamation Suits for Urban Pigeons” as a comic relief from the overwhelming subject of environment and extinction.  She sculpts and casts pigeons from resin and crochets suits of extinct bird’s plumage.  On National Geographic she explains the following:  

“The suits act like a cozy, covering up something we don’t want to see—environmental degradation and species extinction—with something arguably more attractive.”

Phil Ferguson aka Chili Philly

Halloween is around the corner so it’s time to explore costume ideas.  We love these brilliant food-hats created by Melbourne-based crochet artist Phil Ferguson aka Chili Philly. He studied Fine Art at Curtin University and taught himself to knit and crochet.  In 2014 he began creating crochet hats and posting them on the social media platform, Instagram, which now has thousands of followers.  On an interview with The Design Files he says this about his concept:  

“The hat idea was actually inspired by the character Finn from the television show Adventure Time. He wears a bear hat that covers his whole head and only shows his face. Also when I started playing around with making hats, I had started getting into RuPaul’s Drag Race and began to appreciate the art, costumery and decadent headware. I guess it was a natural progression from obsessively watching these two shows to making wearable art. The hat thing kind of just stuck.”

Jose Heroys

Jose Heroys is a fiber artist who makes bird sculptures and fiber art in her Sussex studio. The inspiration for her work comes from a life-long love of birds, nature, and wildlife. Each piece is made by hand using a mixture of crochet, needle-felt and her own invented techniques. The birds are made from wool yarn, fleece and natural fibers with each bird wearing individually numbered metal leg rings.
